Written By Luke Elliott – Owner & Operator Of Pestco Wildlife

We provide homeowners & commercial clients with humane and effective wildlife control services. Keeping animals out of a structure requires animal proofing of the home, which is a common service we provide to people in the Central Ohio cities of Columbus, Dublin, Powell, Hilliard, Upper Arlington, Lewis Center, Marysville, and Delaware OH.

We specialize in bat removal, which I go into a little more detail in the article below. I also service residences for other pest control issues including raccoon removal, squirrel removal, groundhog removal, snake & all additional nuisance wildlife problems. I have around 7 years of experience in this expertise business tackling jobs that some would consider impossible.

There are several different posts in this blog, so feel free to scroll down to view info / post of your particular nuisance pest. This article specifically covers the ins – and – outs of bat removal from the attic.

Bat Removal Hilliard Ohio

There are 11 different species of bats found around the central Ohio regions including the Big Brown Bat, Little Brown Bat, Eastern Pipistrelle Bat, Evening Bats, Indiana Bat, Eastern Red Bat, Eastern Small-Footed Bat, Long-Eared Bat, Big-Eared Bat, Silver-Haired Bats, & the Hoary Bat.

Control and removal of nuisance bats is our specialty. No matter the species of bat, the exclusion process remains the same. One-way exclusion valves will be put in place of the bats main entrance. Once that is done the entire house/ building needs to be sealed properly so that bats cannot re-enter. The bats will be allowed to fly out of the structure unharmed. We provide bat control services to churches, commercial buildings, and private property residences.

We service Dublin, Powell, Hilliard, Upper Arlington, Worthington, Bexley, Westerville, Marysville, Delaware, and the rest of Central Ohio around Columbus for Bats.

                      #Service We Provide

An important factor to consider before you hire a company to exclude bats is how detailed of a seal-up job they do and type of exclusion materials used. We at Pestco Wildlife use exclusion material with a 35 year manufactory guarantee combined with other high – quality material and advanced equipment. Pestco Wildlife guarantees removal of the bats plus a better warranty & workmanship of an average company in the wildlife control industry.

                     #Bat Biology & Info

Unfortunately many species of bats have been slowly dying off all over North America and some parts of Canada due to a disease known as White Nose Syndrome. The disease was discovered in 2006 around bat caves in New York. The disease affects bats by causing fungal bacteria growth on the bats wings. Up-to-date the disease has killed over 7 million bats. In certain caves the disease has killed 90% of the bats inhabiting them. We at Pestco Wildlife care about the future of bat species and we would never do anything to harm these creatures. Every bat exclusion job must be done with extreme caution not to seal the bats inside the residence. Too many bats have died without the poor judgement of inexperienced amateurs trying to do a bat exclusion. Hire us to ensure the job is done right.

The majority of bats that inhabit Ohio are Big Browns. Unlike most other species, Big Browns hibernate inside of your attic instead of caves. Mounds of bat guano pile up above the bat roost after the bats have infested the home for a prolonged period of time. We have serviced jobs around Dublin, Delaware, Powell, and Marysville where the bat excrement was over a foot deep during an attic remediation. The good thing about Big Browns is they will hibernate in your home over the wintertime thus less effectively spreading White Nose Syndrome (as mentioned in the last paragraph) to each other. Good thing for them- not so good for you. That is why we are here to serve you at a moments notice.

For your own protection, we sternly advise you to steer away from inspecting your own attic/ crawl spaces where the bat waste is located. The bat droppings/ aka feces/waste can be extremely harmful to your health if it has produced any harmful bacterias which are common in bat waste, with histoplasmosis being the most common bacteria growth in bat waste. Removing these bats from homes/ commercial buildings can take a lot of time/labor in the bat exclusion process to ensure the job is done professionally. We can only say that we are the best, but the reality is the consumer can only get a good idea of the type of work that needs to be done by talking with us. Call us today with questions and we will gladly take the time to explain the process of bat exclusion to you. Bat removal around Columbus, Dublin, Hilliard, Marysville, and Delaware Ohio is our specialty. We also own the business name “OHIO BAT CONTROL” along with “Pestco Wildlife” so you can rest assured we know what we are doing when it comes to bats, and we also specialize in attic remediation aka waste clean up.

                                    #RACCOONS

Raccoon Removal Hilliard OhioRaccoon Removal Columbus Ohio

Raccoon removal is a service we provide to homeowners and businesses across central Ohio who have raccoon problems through the cities Dublin, Marysville, Hilliard, Powell and Delaware. Raccoons can climb onto your house from an overhanging tree, gutter spout, wood siding, or a power line. The animal investigates the roof searching for access to the attic. Once the raccoons are in the attic they will inflict structural damage that usually needs repaired. We specialize in the control & removal of raccoons in Dublin, Powell, and Hilliard Ohio using various integrated pest management tactics. Traps are set to effectively lure and capture the problem animal without having to utilize any other control method. However, cage shy raccoons will not go into a live cage trap, no matter the type of bait used. This is when IPM (integrated pest management) plays a role in the successful removal of raccoons. We use 3 methods that have all been proven legitimate control solutions. If necessary we can rid the animals of your attic using these methods. Central Ohio cities Hilliard, Dublin, Upper Arlington & Delaware have a large population of raccoons. If you experience a problem give Pestco Wildlife a call.

* Starting in March female raccoons across central Ohio will begin birthing their offspring. Customer complaints of hearing the pups crying in the attic in Hilliard, Marysville, & Dublin OH is typical and they should be removed. We offer the service of going up inside the attic and manually removing the pups before we trap the mother. It is important to have the baby raccoons removed before the mother is trapped & removed.

#Some common questions customers ask are:

Question: What is the usual time frame for trapping and removing the raccoons?

Answer: Trapping can require patience. Typically with our skill set there will be an animal caught within the first 2 nights. Raccoons do not leave foraging for food every night. Control methods change in different circumstances, for instance when there hasn’t been a catch in 3-4 days but the homeowner is still hearing noises. Cage shy raccoons are common, that is why we incorporate different types of traps and/or methods to effectively lure the problem animal.

Question: How do I ensure my family is safe from disease exposure from raccoon waste?

Answer: Do not inspect your own attic. Waste can cross-contaminate with insulation particles from your attic and become airborne. We have special safety equipment that is necessary for us to inspect the attic. Also a tip mentioned on the Animal Disease page is do not run your upstairs bathroom fan vent (such as the one you would turn on for a shower) because raccoons in Hilliard, Powell, & Upper Arlington will tear these vents open in the attic and the fan can suck down contaminated insulation particles.

Question: At what point is it necessary to get a complete attic remediation due to raccoon waste?

Answer: In extreme but not uncommon cases the raccoon waste covers the entire attic. Urine stains coming through the ceiling is a sign of long-term raccoon inhabitation and the homeowner should have them trapped & removed promptly. Hopefully you have the proper insurance policy to make a claim on the feces removal.

Question: What does Pestco Wildlife have to offer me as a customer if I have raccoons in my attic and live close to Powell, Hilliard, Or Delaware?

Answer: We have many years of experience and have trained with qualified professionals specializing in raccoons, bats, birds, squirrels, and other nuisance pest control. We also attend updated training from the Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators Association. Our team runs this business full time in Columbus Ohio as licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Specialists.

              #More information on Raccoons

In the second paragraph we mentioned how it is important to remove the babies before the mother raccoon is trapped. This is because the pups will wander around the attic when the mother does not return. They will die in an area that likely will not be accessible. We receive calls all the time from people who had trapped the raccoons themselves, and after a couple days there is a terrible odor coming from the attic. That is the smell of decomposing offspring the mother raccoon birthed. Although we can still offer fogging of the attic to rid the smell for a couple days, the carcasses of the pups are not usually discovered. In conclusion, it is better to have a pro remove the raccoons instead of the do it yourself trick.

                                         #Squirrels

.squirrel removal dublin ohiosquirrel removal columbus ohio

Squirrel removal is a common service Pestco Wildlife provides to homeowners and businesses across central Ohio through the cities of Dublin, Marysville, Delaware, and Hilliard. An interesting fact about these creatures is their teeth grow 8 inches in estimated length every year but they chew so much that it wears them down. Squirrels will chew around boarded siding, dormers, and soffits to access your attic. 40% of attic fires in america have been caused by squirrels. They have taken entire neighborhoods off the grid from starting fires by chewing on wires and making them spark up. We trap & remove these animals by setting traps in the gutter utilizing bait & paste lures that have proven to be successful in capturing squirrels. Once inside the attic squirrels inflict structural damage by burrowing insulation, chewing on support beams, wires, and a multitude of other attic material. #Some common questions customers ask are:

Question: How are the squirrels getting on my roof in the first place?

Answer: Squirrels will climb overhanging trees and power cables leading to the roof. In unusual cases they will climb wood siding or gutters. Other times they will climb an electrical cord that starts from the ground and goes up into the house.

Question: What are the hazards of having squirrels in the attic?

Answer: Squirrels will chew on electrical cords in the attic posing a fire risk. Structural damage also becomes a concern when the squirrels have lived in the attic for an extended period of time. Pestco Wildlife provides animal proofing to your home.

Question: Will there be squirrels trapped besides the ones getting in my house?

Answer: It depends, squirrels are territorial and chase other squirrels that get close to their harborage (your house.) Traps are set in the gutters/the roof which is more effective than setting the traps on the ground. It is unlikely we would catch a squirrel other than the ones getting in your attic because we catch them on the roof near the hole.

Question: What can be done about the waste left behind by the animals?

Answer: Pestco Wildlife offers attic remediation services. The contaminated insulation will be removed.  The attic is then fogged and sanitized with odor & bacteria elimination remedies.  After the area is decontaminated we recommend new insulation be placed.

                               #Skunks

Skunk Removal Dublin OhioSkunk Removal Hilliard OH

Unlike most of the other common pests, skunks do not cause structural damage. They will however dig holes to access underneath your deck or patio. The skunk smell is the main hazard. Some common questions from customers are:

Question: A skunk just sprayed near my house. How do I get rid of the odor?

Answer: There is no way to eliminate the smell 100%. But Pestco Wildlife carries some of the best odor eliminating remedies you cannot find in stores.

Question: There is a lot of turf damage in my yard. Could this be due to skunks?

Answer: Yes. Skunks will dig in your lawn foraging for grubs. Raccoons will also do this. Skunks tend to dig their holes more cone shaped, where as raccoon foraging holes are uneven and messy.

Question: My household pet got sprayed by a skunk. How do I get the odor out of its fur?

Answer: There are all types of ideas and wives tales out there concerning removing the skunk odor from your pets fur. A simple and proven solution that will not harm your pet is mixing a quart of hydrogen peroxide, a splash of dish soap, and a quarter cup of baking soda. Scrub this solution in your pets fur for at least 5-10 minutes.

Squirrel Removal Dublin, Delaware, Hilliard Ohio

Pestco          614-620-7378        Professional Squirrel Removal

Main Webpage: www.ohwildlifecontrol.com

Squirrels are active year round in Ohio. Control & Removal of these nuisance animals is my specialty. Squirrel removal can be a difficult task for the do-it-yourself homeowner who simply does not want to pay a fee to have them removed by a professional. Something to take into consideration is the longer the squirrels are in the attic, the more damage they will cause to your dormers, roof, and especially the attic. The only reason I am able to have a full-time business doing wildlife control is because I know what to look for during an inspection. It is not effective to just throw a trap up in the attic and hope you catch something. For squirrels, traps need to be set on the outside of the home in the gutters closest to the hole where the squirrels are accessing the attic. Using this method has proven to be very successful for me due to the fact this is the area squirrels have the highest travel rate. I use premium bait & paste ordered offline from a reputable bait & lure dealer specifically designed to attract nuisance animals such as squirrels.

Selection of the proper bait & lure is very important. Some companies just buy these different attractants because the name on the label sounds cool. While they may have some success using these different name brands, I have found the best bait is something that is both visually attracting to the squirrel and most importantly, natural. As you can imagine squirrels do not eat marshmallows every day. So marshmallows are off the menu. On a side note- marshmallows can be an effective bait for raccoon removal because it visually imitates an egg to the raccoon. Ok… getting off topic. Back to squirrels! Once the squirrel can visually see the natural bait, there needs to be a powerful smell on top of it so the squirrel can find the trap in the first place. This is where paste lures come in handy. Not only are these paste lures based from an assortment of nuts, (something squirrels crave everyday – AKA squirrel crack) but also these nut based pastes contain a very sweet & pungent odor. In conclusion, if you have a bait that will be both visually attracting & smells like heaven food squirrels only dream about, your odds of capturing them increase 10 fold. Sorry, not gonna tell you my secret recipe.

There are many different factors that affect consistently being able to utilize the proper control methods to trap and remove nuisance animals. Experience, knowledge, and creativity greatly influence success in this industry. Experience because there are many different situations and circumstances where one may not know what to do at first. Learning from mistakes & embracing them is a threshold people must break in all aspects of life in order to be successful at what they do. Squirrel removal might sound silly to some, but its how I pay my bills and keep on my feet. Not to mention without people like me, squirrels might as well have an HD TV in the attic along with a lazy boy chair, & why not throw in some chips and salsa? Haha, but in all seriousness if you have squirrels or any other nuisance pest in the attic give me a call, you will not find a better service.

Thank you for reading -Luke DBA Pestco
