# My Credibility: I obtain this knowledge I am sharing with you today due to the fact I have my own nuisance wildlife business based out of Columbus, OH and have dealt with many concerned clients who have had raccoons infesting the attic area of their home. I have done extensive research to best serve those clients who have a million questions. My father has done nuisance wildlife control for over 17 years and has taught me a lot about the biology of these animals and the risks they present to people.
# Purpose Of Article: The subject of this article is going to be focused on the different hazards raccoons cause when they invade the attic. Diseases & parasites can be found in the raccoon feces and fur, and you should know the risks involved even if you don’t have a problem. Raccoon waste is very hazardous and below you can read some of the risks involved.
KEYWORDS TO KNOW- (Raccoon Poop = Feces, Waste, Excrement, Droppings.)
** RACCOONS ** – CARRIERS OF RABIES & DISTEMPER. ADDITIONALLY, RACCOON FECES CARRIES ROUND WORM & CAN ALSO DEVELOP HARMFUL SPORES OF BACTERIA OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. RACCOONS WASTE IS MORE DANGEROUS WHEN IT IS DRIED UP BECAUSE IT PRODUCES AIRBORNE PATHOGENS THROUGH MICROSCOPIC DUST & FIBERGLASS INSULATION.
Who in their lifetime has had a family of raccoons living in their attic, crawl space, or chimney? If you haven’t already, you are more than likely going to experience raccoon problems somewhere down the line. The initial course of action that should be taken when having raccoons in the attic is hiring a professional trapper to remove the problem animals. Trapping and removing the animals using the do-it-yourself trick can be frustrating & end up costing you more money in the long run because after you fail to catch the raccoons, they will proceed to cause additional damage. When the animals are controlled & removed properly, you may ask yourself afterwards – what should be done about the dirty attic the raccoons left behind? Is it safe? Should we just leave everything alone? – Doing nothing to address the problem is simply not an option, unless you want raccoons or other nuisance wildlife back inside your attic. All animals leave their scent behind, and other animals can pick up on it pretty easily and will be attracted to the structure. It is a recipe for wildlife infestation. The recommended coarse of action is to have the attic remediated and sanitized. Meaning taking out all the insulation, disinfecting, and putting new insulation in place of the old. This will rid 99% of the odor and also eliminate the pathogens that can be found in the raccoon feces.
* Raccoon Round Worm *
One of the most common hazards with raccoons in the attic is the ROUND WORM EGGS that can be found in the animal waste. See, when a raccoon has round worm, the parasite (round worm) lays its eggs inside the digestion tracts of the raccoon. When the raccoons expel their excrement throughout the attic, the round worm eggs are found inside the feces and come into contact with insulation & dust. Once the feces has cross-contaminated with the insulation, the microscopic round worm eggs can become airborne through the dust and also fiberglass particles found in most types of insulation. If inhaled by a human, round worm eggs become feasible in producing the parasite, adult round worms. People who get round worm have a high fatality rate. Even if you don’t die, the round worm virus attacks the nervous system leaving you impaired with neurologic disorders such as blindness. How serious do you think your ‘raccoon in the attic’ problem is now? Not only do they cause a multitude of damage & loss of sleep, but the risk of disease is what drives most people out of their chairs. If you live in the Columbus Ohio area and have raccoons in your attic, give me a call today and together we can take care of your problem by removing the animals, and then remediating the attic & sanitizing to ensure everything is safe.
Aside from round worm, there is a whole spectrum of other raccoon diseases that can be a factor. Parasites such as mites, fleas, and even bed bugs can infest the attic after they are transported by the raccoons. The bugs will de-tach from the raccoon and get on the insulation. When this happens, the insects will begin their search for a new host. Humans are usually the next best option, after all – they are inside your house at that point. My company can take care of the nuisance raccoons & make your attic like new again. All you have to do is call!
CONTROL METHODS USED TO ERADICATE RACCOONS
The quickest way to rid raccoons from the attic is to locate the entry/exit point on the structure, and set a trap over that hole. Once this is done, the raccoon(s) have no choice except to travel through the trap and inevitably be captured. Removing the raccoons in a timely manner is very important because the longer the raccoons are inside the attic, the more damage they will cause & also additional feces will be shed. No matter what, after the raccoons have been successfully removed, it is a good idea to have an attic restoration performed to ensure no pathogens are left behind. An insecticide treatment can also be done if an infestation of parasites from the raccoons are evident. We at Pestco will give your home a thorough inspection & address any problems you may have. Experience is key when providing quality customer service. If you don’t live around Columbus, take your time when finding a company to do the job. Someone who only specializes in wildlife problems is preferred, DO NOT hire a “big name” company and especially not a pest control company who does insect treatments. You want the local businesses who are tried and true – Angies List is a great way to go.
Thank you all for reading and I wish you the best of luck when dealing with your raccoon problems, now or in the future!
